Photos used to sell for very small commissions, now the payout value is increasing and the stock photography industry is growing at an ever increasing rate. We are currently seeing a vast increase in sales despite the economic recessioin, with photos now selling for five to ten times what they used to sell for.

My main piece of advice to you however is to make sure that you learn the ins and outs of the industry first. Yes it can be very lucrative and rewarding but there are some things you need to be very aware of before starting.

- How to best market your work
The only people who don’t make money from stock photography are those who don't do it or those who give up too soon!

In stock photography you upload your photographs online. Good agencies will not charge you any up front fees, so if you do come across one that does, avoid it! The more photographs you upload to your chosen agencies, the more income you stand a chance of making.

It makes sense to use the agencies, they already have a huge market of people looking for useable images for their advertising campaigns or for their web sites. The agencies will take a cut of your income, however that's only top be expected as they are acting as your agent and increasing your chances of actually selling your photos. You will be paid for each photograph of yours which is downloaded.
So it makes complete sense for you to focus on what you are good at (excuse the pun!), that is taking photographs and let the expert sales people at the agencies take care of the business and money side for you. This will allow you reach a worldwide audience. Can you imagine how difficult that would be if you were trying to sell directly!
